Ciro Ibanez (Cuba) : Going heavy in Havana, 1984
Ciro Ibanez (born in 1959) was one of the main Cuban athletes of the 1980s. He mainly competed in the heavyweight category and won 10 Cuban national championships.
On the international scene, he won gold at the 1983 Panamerican Games in Caracas, 2 Pan American Championships (1981, 1983) and 2 Central American Championships. He represented the Cuban national team at the 1983 world championships in Moscow (90 kg, 5th place), at the 1986 world championships in Sofia (100 kg, 9th) and at many major international tournaments of the 1980s.
Unfortunately for Ciro, he was unable to compete in the Olympics because of the boycott of the Cuban government at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and 1988 in Seoul.
His personal best time in competition is 385 kg (167.5 kg in snatch + 217.5 kg in clean and jerk) at the Manuel Suares in Havana (1984) shown in the photo.
