In the world of sports, there are stories that inspire us, that give us chills, and that make us believe in the power of hard work and determination. Ivy-Marie Buzinhani Brustello's journey to becoming a world champion is one of those stories.
It all started when Ivy was just four years old and began practicing gymnastics. From an early age, she had a competitive spirit and a drive to succeed. But it wasn't until five years ago, at the age of seven, that Ivy discovered her true passion: Olympic weightlifting.
Under the guidance of her coach, Abigail Guerrero, Ivy began her journey in the under 40 kg category. This category may not exist in Quebec, but it is approved by the International Weightlifting Federation, which meant Ivy had the opportunity to compete at the highest level.
On the 25th of March, Ivy's hard work and dedication paid off as she competed in the IWF Youth World Championships at just 12 years old (her 13th year). With nerves of steel, Ivy took to the platform for her first attempt at the snatch, starting heavy with her personal record of 51 kg. With the crowd cheering her on, Ivy lifted the bar with ease and successfully completed the lift. Buoyed by her success, she increased the weight to 53 kg for her second attempt, and once again, she lifted the bar with confidence and determination.
But Ivy wasn't done yet. She decided to go for 54 kg on her third and final attempt. The bar was heavy, but Ivy gave it her all, almost completing the lift before the bar fell forward. Despite the disappointment, Ivy knew she had given it her all. When her competitors were erratic in their technique and failed their attempts, Ivy demonstrated impeccable technique and ironclad determination. The gold medal was hers.
But Ivy's story doesn't end there. With the clean and jerk still to come, Ivy took a deep breath and prepared herself for the next challenge. Starting with 63 kg, Ivy lifted the bar with ease, then increased the weight to 65 kg for her second attempt. Once again, she completed the lift with grace and power, leaving the crowd in awe.
But Ivy was far from finished. With the gold medal in the clean and jerk within her reach, Ivy decided to go for a superb 67 kg on her third and final attempt. With the crowd on their feet, Ivy lifted the bar with all her might, completing the lift with a roar of triumph. With her total weight of 120 kg, Ivy had won the gold medal in the clean and jerk as well.
For Ivy, this was not just a victory for herself, but for her entire country. With her historic win, Ivy became the first Canadian youth weightlifting world champion in history, inspiring young athletes across the country to follow their dreams and pursue their passions.
