Guerriers Beyond Lifting Athletes Shine at Inaugural Student Championships

The first edition of the Student Championships, organized by the FHQ and hosted by the club Fortius at the Antoine-Brossard high school gymnasium, was held on May 6th and 7th. The event featured impressive performances by several athletes from the club Guerriers Beyond Lifting under head coach, Abigail Guerrero, @coachabigail.
With two platforms for competition, the Student Championships attracted talented young weightlifters, showcasing their skills in snatch and clean and jerk events. Athletes from Guerriers Beyond Lifting demonstrated their prowess by winning numerous medals across different categories. The club came back home with 17 gold medals and 10 silver medals !

Among the standout performers was 11-year-old Damien Persico, who weighed 29.78 kg and achieved a snatch of 34 kg (+1 kg) and clean and jerk of 43 kg (+6 kg), totaling 77 kg (+10 kg). Damien's outstanding performance earned him three gold medals.

Nine-year-old Mirko Persico, with a bodyweight of 35.20 kg, won three silver medals after snatching 28 kg and achieving a clean and jerk of 41 kg (+5 kg), totaling 69 kg (+2 kg).

Fiona Gervais, 16 years old and weighing 62.40 kg, managed a snatch of 69 kg (+3 kg) and clean and jerk of 85 kg (+4 kg), accumulating a total of 154 kg (+7 kg). Fiona won two gold medals and one silver medal in her category.

Temuera Betham, a 25-year-old weighing 108.69 kg, snatched 118 kg and achieved a clean and jerk of 135 kg, reaching a total of 253 kg, only 6 kg shy of his personal best. Temuera won three gold medals and is currently balancing weightlifting 2-3 times a week with CrossFit as he pursues law studies. Notably, he coached Mirko Persico as part of his evaluation to become a level 1 weightlifting coach. A few days after the competition, Temuera received his evaluation pass notice. Congratulations Temuera !

Ha Bao Ngan Dong, a 25-year-old with a bodyweight of 58.86 kg, won three silver medals with a snatch of 53 kg (+6 kg) and clean and jerk of 71 kg (+5 kg), totaling 124 kg (+11 kg).

Nine-year-old Daniela Millin, weighing 35.58 kg, achieved a snatch of 28 kg (+2 kg) and clean and jerk of 36 kg, amassing a total of 64 kg (+2 kg). Daniela's performance earned her three gold medals.

Sasha Millin, a 12-year-old weighing 47.89 kg, won three silver medals after snatching 46 kg (+3 kg) and achieving a clean and jerk of 57 kg (+5 kg), accumulating a total of 103 kg (+8 kg).

Twelve-year-old Jayden Catania, with a bodyweight of 65.16 kg, won three gold medals after managing a snatch of 53 kg (+10 kg) and clean and jerk of 60 kg (+10 kg), totaling an impressive 113 kg (+20 kg).

Lastly, 12-year-old Emily Ibanez-Guerrero, weighing 58.8 kg, snatched 80 kg (+1 kg) and achieved a clean and jerk of 101 kg (+2 kg), reaching a total of 181 kg (+4 kg). Emily's exceptional performance earned her three gold medals and ranked her third-best in both snatch and clean and jerk ratios across all competitors at the competition.

The Student Championships provided a platform for these young athletes to showcase their incredible talent and dedication. The future certainly looks bright for the Guerriers Beyond Lifting team, as their athletes continue to achieve impressive results and set new personal records.

The successful organization of the inaugural Student Championships also bodes well for the future of weightlifting competitions in the region.
